Using Hearing to Enable Conversations

From hearing assessments to hearing aid fittings and tinnitus management, we offer a full range of expert services designed to help you hear and live better.

Ear Wax Removal

You may have noticed that it is becoming increasingly difficult to get an appointment for ear wax removal through the NHS. This is mostly due to changes in funding at Primary Care Level.

Earwax blocking the ear canal can cause a few issues that include reduced hearing, discomfort, hidden ear infections and in some instances tinnitus (sounds in your head or ears that are not generated by sounds outside). For these reasons, people need the wax to be removed quickly and painlessly as soon as possible.

Chellaston Hearing Services operate with “Loups” which provides 3.5 times magnification allowing a very clear image of the ear canal and ear drum. Clear visualisation helps locate the wax in order to carefully remove it using professional instruments. The procedures are safe, effective, and minimally invasive. Appointments last up to 45 mins to allow time to go through a medical history and consent form. We will show you the build-up of wax using a video otoscope and once the procedure is over, we can show you the results again with the video otoscope. We recommend the use of olive oil spray (such as Earol) twice a day for at least a week leading up to your appointment.

Comprehensive Assessments of the Full Auditory Pathway

Whether it is a shorter ear-and-hearing check just to see what the next steps are, or an in-depth hearing assessment of the complete auditory pathway: we’ve got you covered. We understand that it can be daunting to take that first step in your hearing journey, so our approach is highly clinical, warm and casual at the same time. We go at your pace.

Our clinical tests are usually performed in a soundproof booth or through calibrated speakers in the room and include a selection/combination of:
⊙ The traditional hearing test with either over the ear headphones or insert earphones whilst listening to tones
⊙ Speech Discrimination Tests
⊙ Speech in Noise Tests
⊙ Noise Tolerance Tests
⊙ Testing for ‘Dead’ Areas within the Inner Ear
⊙ Auditory Processing Tests
These tests provide an informed recommendation, onwards referral and hearing aid prescription and set-up.

Hearing Aids Fitting, Tuning and Repair

Hearing aid technology is always developing and is now able to really assist you in connecting with the sounds that are important to you – whether that is loved ones, music, bird song, your favourite television show or even just sounds around the house. Hearing aids can even separate the sounds that would matter to you from the sounds that would make hearing difficult – such as background noise.

When you hear better, you connect better and your general well-being is better. The hearing care pathway is not just about the hearing aid fitting, but walking the walk with you through the journey.

Tinnitus Management and Support

The NHS defines tinnitus as ‘'perception of internal noises' in the absence of external acoustic stimuli. Tinnitus can be heard in one ear, both or simply somewhere in or around the head. The sound heard can and does vary a great deal between people. The effect that tinnitus has on individuals can also vary from ‘hardly having any impact’ to being ‘bothersome’ or for some it may even cause ‘distress’.

At Chellaston Hearing Services, a comprehensive case history and assessment will help us guide you through some treatment options. No two people with tinnitus will present the same, so this service is highly personalised. Some treatment options may result in instant relief, and others may require long-term investment from both the patient and the Audiologist’s part.

Custom Hearing Protection

Noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus that can persist for a day, weeks or even indefinitely. There is a term called ‘dosage’ of noise exposure and that is dependent on two main things:

1. The ‘volume’ or intensity of the noise
2. The 'time' or duration of the exposure to that noise.

Therefore, the risk to one’s hearing increases with longer exposure and louder sounds.

There are several things one can do to prevent exposure to loud sounds affecting your hearing health and one of them is ‘hearing protection’. At Chellaston Hearing Services we offer a range of hearing protection that includes: off-the-shelf and custom hearing protection. We can work with you to find the right type for your needs – whether you are a musician or whether you like loud hobbies such as motor sports.

What our happy clients say

I love Julia's enthusiasm for all things to do with hearing. Her love for hearing oozes from her every action.

I have never had a hearing assessment this comprehensive with as much additional clinical testing and we appreciate that all of the recommendations that Julia made is based on clinical evidence.

I was very apprehensive about having my earwax removed because I have never had it done before, but her description of the procedure and her clinical expertise made me feel safe and I was very happy with the results.

Julia explained my test results with me in an interactive way, using lots of tools that made a complex result easier to understand. She used clinical tools to help my wife understand my hearing loss and what it sounds like to me and this was invaluable in helping us moving forward to accepting a hearing aid.

Can we please see Julia again, because she has managed to get much more engagement from patient X. We would like that consistency from someone that has a passion for going the extra mile.
